Chapter 6
As he lay in bed that night, Jared thought about his dinner with Lucas. After spending every evening for over two weeks together, they had gotten comfortable with one another. He was amazed how much he’d been able to learn about the man through bits and pieces of conversation and quiet observation. But what he found more unexpected was how much of himself he had shared without hesitation.
Jared had married Susan because she had been his closest friend, the only person he could be with for extended periods of time without feeling uncomfortable. He figured that meant he loved her and, once upon a time, that had seemed like a good reason for marriage. But deep down, Jared had felt alone even when Susan was with him. It didn’t take long for both of them to admit that while the love they shared was real, it wasn’t a good basis for a relationship.
Reflecting back on those times and what the younger version of himself felt, Jared realized the same was true for his sense of closeness with Susan. Not being uncomfortable around a person wasn’t the same as being comfortable with them. That was something he hadn’t recognized until he had sat in his kitchen, holding Lucas’s hand, talking about the most difficult moments in his life, and feeling safety and peace instead of panic and nerves.
He had been attracted to Lucas’s beauty before he had gotten to know him. As they’d spent more time together, he had come to genuinely like his sense of humor; he was fascinated by his outlook on life, and he respected his willingness to work hard on whatever tasks Jared gave him. And then that night, Jared had been gifted with a fully open view of the human being beneath the stunning but biting exterior, and he found that his attraction ran more than skin deep. Sitting next to Lucas in the quiet kitchen, Jared realized he had vanquished his ever-present ache of loneliness.
“Jared?” Lucas whispered into the crack of Jared’s open bedroom door. “Are you awake?”
Immediately, Jared sat up, the blanket pooling around his waist. “Is everything all right?”
“Yeah, but I couldn’t sleep.”
With a squeak, the door swung open and Lucas stepped inside. He stood on the opposite side of the room from the window so the moonlight didn’t show much of him, but based on the defined lines of his firm body, Lucas wasn’t dressed. That wasn’t a surprise because he now knew Lucas slept naked, but he wondered whether, unlike the previous night, Lucas had put his underwear on before leaving his bed. Before Jared could get his thoughts in order, Lucas had crossed the room to stand next to him.
“Can I get in with you?” Lucas asked, his voice quiet and hesitant.
Jared lifted the blanket and scooted over to make space before he had time to think about how he should answer. Lucas slid onto the sheet and molded himself to Jared’s side, providing him with an answer to his question—no, Lucas wasn’t wearing underwear.
